Smile App Privacy Policy

Last updated 16 October 2026

Smile ("the app") is a product of PowerProv Pty Ltd ("we", "us"). This policy explains what the Smile app collects, why, and the choices you have. It covers the mobile app specifically. Our general website privacy policy is at powerprov.com.au/privacy. You can also read the Smile Terms & Conditions.

The short version

Smile exists to help you share a real smile with another person nearby. To do that, the app needs to know when another Smiler is close to you. We take privacy seriously — here's exactly what we collect, why, and who we share it with. We don't run ads and we don't track you across other apps or websites.

What we collect and why

First name and profile photo Your photo is stored securely on our servers and is only shown to another Smiler during a Smile Alert, when you're both nearby (see "What nearby means" below). It is never used for any other purpose. Your name is the display name you choose.

Email address Stored securely on our servers (via Supabase) for account management and login. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive the details you approve during that sign-in (such as your name and email).

Location Smile requests location access "While Using the App" only, at reduced accuracy (roughly 100 metres). While the app is open, your latest location is saved on our servers so we can work out which Smilers are near each other. Only our servers use it: other Smilers never see your location, and the in-app radar shows only a rough distance and direction for nearby Smilers, never where they are. Your approximate location at the moment of a smile exchange is also recorded to power city smile counts and heatmaps. Smile does not use "Always" or background location.

Bluetooth presence When Smile is running (including in the background), the app broadcasts a Smile identifier over Bluetooth and scans for the identifiers of other nearby Smilers. This is how the app knows another member is close by so it can send you both an alert. The identifier doesn't contain your name, photo or contact details, and only our servers can match it to a Smile account. It is used only to detect proximity between Smile members.

Smile activity Your smile count and streak data are stored on our servers to power features like streaks and city smile counts.

Notifications With your permission, we register a push notification token so we can alert you when a Smiler is nearby or when there's something to see in the app. The token identifies your device for delivery only.

In-app purchases (Support Smile) If you choose to support Smile with an optional in-app purchase, the payment is handled entirely by Apple — we never see your card or payment details. We use RevenueCat to process and verify these purchases. RevenueCat receives an anonymous app user ID it generates, your purchase and transaction history (product, price, date, receipt), and basic device information (such as device model, OS version, country and app version). We don't send RevenueCat your name, email, photo or location.

What "nearby" means

"Nearby" means close enough for your phones to detect each other over Bluetooth — usually within a few dozen metres, depending on walls and devices — or, when Bluetooth can't confirm who it is, within about 200 metres based on your last location.

AI features

Smile uses Claude AI (by Anthropic) for one thing: to check that a new profile photo contains a real face. Your photo is sent to Anthropic only for that one-time check, and nothing else — no name, location, email, or messages — is ever sent to AI.

Service providers

To operate Smile, we work with the following trusted service providers who process data on our behalf:

  • Supabase — secure database and authentication (email, name, activity data).
  • Anthropic — profile-photo face check (your photo, used only for that check).
  • RevenueCat — in-app purchase processing and verification (anonymous app user ID, purchase history and basic device information).
  • Apple and Google — optional sign-in (the name and email you approve when signing in with Apple or Google).
  • Resend — transactional email delivery (email address only).
  • Expo and Apple — delivery of push notifications to your device (your push token and the notification text).

Each provider is bound by its own privacy policy and data-processing agreements. We do not authorise them to use your data for any purpose beyond delivering Smile's features.

What we don't do

  • We don't run ads or track you across other apps or websites.

Sharing and sale of data

In the unlikely event of a merger, acquisition, financing, sale of all or part of our business, or a marketing opportunity, we may share, sell, or transfer your information for commercial purposes. If we do, we'll always give you notice and, where the law requires it, a way to opt out. As a standard requirement, anyone who receives your information must protect it. We may also disclose information if required by law.

Where your data is stored

Account and app data is stored on managed cloud infrastructure. Our primary database region is Asia-Pacific (Singapore). By using the app you consent to this processing.

Your rights and deletion

You can delete your account at any time via Settings → Delete account. This removes your profile and activity data from our servers. Note: simply deleting the app does not delete your account or data. You can also update your profile details in the app, and request access to your personal data by contacting us.

Children

Smile is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Security

We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections and managed, access-controlled hosting. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your data.

Your choices

  • You can turn Location, Bluetooth and Notification permissions on or off at any time in your device Settings. Turning off Bluetooth or Location will stop the app from detecting nearby Smilers.
  • You can manage notification preferences in Settings.
  • You can delete your account, or request access to your data, at any time.

Contact

For any privacy question, data request, or to exercise your rights under applicable law, please get in touch through our contact form.

Changes to this policy

If we change how the Smile app handles your data, we'll update this page and revise the "last updated" date above. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance.
