The Smile App

Welcome to Smile.

Things are looking up!™

Smile lets you know when other Smilers are nearby, and nudges you both to look up, spot each other, and share a smile. That’s it. That’s the whole app.

No swiping. No chat. No expectations.

Just quick moments of connection to make your day.

In a world full of algorithms that force us to stay face down, focused on our phones, Smile does the opposite — by creating opportunities to look up and share serendipitous smiles with strangers.*

*Smiling is the simplest, easiest, friendliest way to connect with another human being. Don’t make it weird.

The Lowdown

Frequently asked questions.

Is Smile a dating app?

No. Smile creates brief, friendly moments of human connection. Don’t make it weird.

How does Smile work?

Smile uses a mix of GPS and Bluetooth to detect other Smilers nearby. When there’s a match, both of you get a nudge to look up. The more people who use it, the better it works — so share Smile with a friend.

Is Smile free?

Yes, completely free. Join the waitlist for iOS or Android.

Where does Smile work?

Anywhere you are — cafés, commutes, parks, queues. The more Smilers in your area, the more often you’ll get a nudge.

Is my privacy protected?

Yes. Smile never shares your identity, location, or profile with other users. All they see is your photo and (optionally) your first name or nickname.

Smile isn’t working, what do I do?

Check the Smile Support section in Settings and make sure you have Bluetooth on, Notifications on, and Location Services set to Always.

Why aren’t I seeing any smiles?

Two possible reasons: 1) Your settings aren’t right — see above. 2) There aren’t enough Smilers in your area yet. The fix is simple: share Smile with friends.

Who made this?

Eran Thomson built Smile because people are feeling lonelier and more disconnected than ever — and because he believes a single smile from a stranger can make your whole day.

A Smiler is creeping me out — what can I do?

Smile is intended to encourage positive, respectful, non-physical human connection. If someone is misbehaving, you have three options: 1) Mute them (added to your Muted Smilers list in Settings). 2) Block them (irreversible — you’ll never get an alert from them again). 3) Report them (anyone reported 3 times is permanently banned).

What’s the secret to a winning Smile?

Clean teeth, fresh breath, and a bright personality.
